A Brighter Future for Families in Need

02. Bar Odar Special School: Empowering Special Needs Students for a Brighter Future

Bar Odar Special School, established in 2016, has grown from just seven students to over 100 students those with intellectual and physical disabilities. Forty students currently reside in the school’s dormitories. Under the leadership of Madam Anne Otieno, the school strives to provide quality education and care in a safe environment.

Lanterns for Light Foundation has supported the school since its inception, funding the construction of two dormitories, five classrooms, a dining room, and a staff room. With the recent purchase of a two-hectare plot by Praytube partners, we are now planning the school’s expansion to accommodate even more students in need. Let’s team up together to provide the special needs children a special place to thrive.

Special Needs

Why It Matters

Children with physical and intellectual disabilities in rural Kenya often face neglect, isolation, and lack of support, leaving them without education or social interaction. Girls with mental disabilities are particularly vulnerable to abuse, with little ability to seek help. By building dormitories and additional classrooms, we are creating a safe, nurturing space where these children can learn, grow, and live with dignity. Thanks to these efforts, over 150 students are now receiving the education and care they deserve.
With these efforts, over 150 students are now enrolled, receiving education and care in a dignified environment

Impact & How You Can Help

Lanterns for Light Foundation has been a key supporter of Bar Odar, helping provide a safe space for these students to live and study. The school’s progress has been significant, including the construction of dormitories for boys and girls and classrooms for over 100 students. The goal is to build additional dormitories and classrooms to accommodate the growing number of students.
Feeding Program

75,000+ Meals Served, Empowering Education Through Nutrition

$15 provides lunch for a month per student.
Access to education is a fundamental human right, as outlined in the 1948 Human Rights Charter. Yet, in Kenya, over 1 million primary-age children remain out of school despite efforts to make education universally accessible. One of the most effective interventions to increase school enrollment, retention, and academic performance is school feeding programs. Providing daily nutritious meals not only keeps children in school but also enhances their concentration, cognitive abilities, and overall well-being.

Your support will provide:

In 2012, Lanterns For Light Foundation launched a school feeding program at Ngege Primary School in Nyakach, starting with fewer than 50 students in Grades 1 to 3. The goal was simple:

With growing impact and need, the program has expanded to support all 300 students from 1st to 8th grade, providing one nutritious meal per day. This initiative has significantly improved:

Attendance rates – More children stay in school consistently

Academic performance – Better concentration and engagement

Health and well-being – Reduced cases of malnutrition and vulnerability to diseases
